In a county chockful of wineries and winemakers, it takes a certain something to stand out from the crowd. The next generation of Sonoma County winemakers are setting themselves apart by following their own winemaking philosophies, and making stylistic choices that are innovative and interesting, resulting in some truly great wines.
The Green Valley AVA is located in the southwestern part of the Russian River Valley, bounded by the towns of Sebastopol, Forestville and Occidental. The area is known for its foggy climate and well-drained soil, which makes the wines throughout the AVA unusually cohesive and distinct–in other words, a worthwhile tasting experience, to be sure.
With many small scale operations, Cloverdale is a gem for both wine nerds and casual drinkers. Those desiring a better understanding of how grapes turn to wine can drink up quite an education, while the rest can just drink some of the best wines in the country.
For the past 33 years, the Ferrers have helped wine drinkers in Sonoma County learn about the sometimes-underappreciated category of sparkling wines. Named after José Ferrer’s wife Gloria, this winery is one of the only places in Sonoma where you can enjoy sparkling wines with grapes that were hand-picked.
The unique Fort Ross-Seaview AVA is distinguished by a cool climate, steep mountains, and stunning Pacific Ocean views. The region, which is renowned for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, has five wineries as well as 18 commercial vineyards. Spend a day meandering through this beautiful coastal region to try Fort Ross wines, or visit a nearby region to taste wines made from grapes grown in Fort Ross.
