While you can find Sonoma County wine in our glass on a regular basis, April is a great time to drink the wines of this world-class region. Why this month in particular, you may wonder? Well, April is Sonoma County Wine Month, which makes it the perfect excuse to celebrate all things Sonoma County wine.
With more than 400 wineries producing wines from 60+ grape varieties in 18 designated AVAs, Sonoma County is a wine region for those who want options (and for those who want it all!). Sonoma County’s varied climatic and geographical conditions allow for a wide range of grapes to be grown – from cabernet sauvignon to zinfandel, chardonnay to pinot noir, pinot gris to petit sirah, and more – and the resulting wines are stylistically just as diverse. Simply put: there’s a varietal and a style for every type of palate.
Not only that, but Sonoma Wine Country truly has something for everyone, making it an amazing place to visit. Here, you’ll find wineries offering vineyard hikes, wine and food pairings, educational experiences, outdoor picnics, and Bocce ball; lodging options that range between luxury resorts and secluded inns to boutique hotels and quaint B&Bs; acclaimed restaurants that are dedicated to sourcing as locally and seasonally as possible; and activities that run the gamut from the adventurous (zip lining and hot air ballooning) to the leisurely (spa treatments and golf).
This month, in honor of Sonoma County Wine Month, wineries are rolling out the red carpet with fun and innovative experiences you won’t want to miss. Don’t live close by? With direct flights into Santa Rosa (STS), getting to Sonoma County is faster and easier than you might expect — so is bringing your favorite wines home, thanks to Alaska Airlines’ Wines Fly Free program. Up to a case of wine is included as part of your free luggage allowance on flights originating from the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport!
We encourage you to take advantage of this celebratory month by exploring this phenomenal wine region, but even if you can’t make it in person, you can still participate from afar. Some wineries are offering special virtual experiences you can enjoy from anywhere, and you can always purchase acclaimed Sonoma wines directly from the wineries to enjoy at home. Check out the fun happenings in Sonoma County (below), and get ready to raise a glass to Sonoma County Wine Month!
